(Related: Is Barstow Safe To Visit?) Things to do in Barstow, CA 1. Short of moving into the Mojave Natural Preserve itself, it’s one of the closest cities to – if not practically in – the ancient desert. The drive to Sin City is considerably longer at 2 hours 20 minutes. The Mojave desert separates Los Angeles from Las Vegas and Barstow sits on the Californian side of the arid wilderness, about an hour and forty minutes’ drive away from L.A. Today, it’s an ever-expanding city sat on the edge of the Mojave desert, featuring a rich community and good access to nature. The ongoing railroads and eventually the famous Route 66 kept immigrants coming into the area, though, so that Barstow never failed. The mine shut down only 14 years later when the silver deposits ran out. The town’s booming prosperity was unfortunately short-lived. It was first settled in 1882 and went through a couple of name changes before they settled on Barstow, after the president of Santa Fe. Rather than being part of the gold rush, however, Barstow was known for its silver. ![]() It was an excellent experience and with so few drive ins left, one I would highly recommend to anyone traveling in the area.It shouldn’t be surprising to learn that Barstow, California – like many towns in the Mojave – was first settled by Americans as a mining town. The other screen included another currently running feature film more targeted to PG audiences. With two different screens, the primary screen included a new top rated release and a second recently released popular feature. Someone else commented on the driving lights that couldn't be turned off when running the radio, but while there I saw that the concession stand had a shelf full of battery powered stereo radios so it appears they've made provision for that issue. We stopped in Barstow on our way to LA with our 13 year old and she got the opportunity to experience a great blast from the past, including old fashioned concession clips, a young man working concession wearing a red bowtie just like the old "soda jerks." The sound was great - came in through FM radio channels. Still love the idea of a drive in if not the execution. Did not eat any confectionery so can't comment on that aspect but as this was a quiet Monday it may have been less than representative. I took the radio back at the end of our movie and had to knock the attendant up from the caravan at the back, whilst the angry occupants from the cars watching the stalled other screen searched in vain for someone to raise the issue with. Establishing all this took up half the movie, and at the same time the other movie screen went blank. So if you go take a radio as there was 1 ghetto blaster to hire from the site. Could not keep the radio on without the engine running which ruled out watching from the open rear of the car. The otehr screen was showing The Man from UNCLE and that had a few cars, but for ours we were alone. As it was we arrived for the 10pm showing of Fantastic 4. It would appear the drive in have little option in the matter but though this be no issue if you are a local for other visitors wanting to experience the drive in movie atmosphere you will have to take what you can get. Unfortunately the 2, 7pm showings were of R rated movies and the 2 at 10 family fair. Was looking forward to coming here as part of a 2,500 mile road trip. ![]()
